Student Ambassadors
Student Ambassadors serve the J. Sargeant Reynolds community in a number
of ways. Our Ambassadors assist the Marketing and Outreach and Recruitment
Offices by representing
the College to a variety of constituencies including high school students,
local and state officials, and members of the College Board. Ambassadors attend
all SOAR (Student Orientation and Registration) sessions where they work with
small groups of students familiarizing them with the campus, assisting them
with class registration, and generally acting as hosts to students.
Ambassadors provide campus tours to groups visiting JSRCC and aid current students
by assisting with the information
and welcome tables at the beginning of each semester. In addition, Ambassadors enroll in SDV 109, a leadership development class, during the spring semester.
Each Ambassador serves for three semesters: Summer, Fall and Spring. For their time and work, each Student Ambassador receives a scholarship.
To become an Ambassador, interested students should contact the Office of First Year Initiatives at soar@reynolds.edu. The application process for the following academic year begins early in the spring semester and consists of a written application and an interview. Selected students then spend the remainder of the spring semester completing a series of training sessions to prepare them for their many Student Ambassador responsibilities.

JSR LEAD is the college’s student leadership development program. Launched in 2008, the program enrolls 20 students in a two semester experience where students develop the tools needed to work as effective leaders. In the fall semester, JSR LEAD students participate in a program retreat, work on team building skills, attend the VCCS Student Leadership Conference, learn about corporate etiquette, enhance public speaking skills and participate in community service. In the spring semester, JSR LEAD students take SDV 109 which is a one-credit leadership development class. This class, which meets for eight weeks, includes such topics as leadership styles and theories, ethical decision making, communication, managing change, wellness and balance, gender and diversity in leadership, and conflict management. Students complete additional community service and have a final retreat to conclude their experience in JSR LEAD. JSR LEAD provides an opportunity for students to enhance or develop leadership skills while making lifelong friendships.
