academic advisingWelcome

As a student at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College, your success is important to us. Academic Advising at Reynolds is guided by College Policy 1-19 (Academic Advising), which essentially encourages first-year and non-curricular students to meet with academic advisors in any campus Student Success Center, and encourages second-year degree students, Career Studies Certificate (CSC) and Certificate students to meet with faculty advisors.

Getting Started

If this is your first semester at Reynolds, it is important to obtain as much information as possible for a successful transition. JSRCC offers multiple opportunities for you to obtain the advice you need.

New students should complete the College placement test so that individual skill level in the areas of reading, writing, and mathematics may be assessed for the purpose of appropriate course placement and selection. More information about placement testing can be found at the College’s Testing Center website. Placement tests should be completed prior to participation in any of the following initiatives:

Meeting with an Academic Advisor

New, non-curricular, and continuing students that have completed 30 or fewer credit hours are encouraged to meet with an advisor in any campus Student Success Center.

Academic advisors are prepared to inform students about JSRCC’s policies and procedures, academic program requirements, and College services.

Students that have completed more than 30 credits or who are enrolled in a Certificate or Career Studies Certificate (CSC) should meet with a faculty advisor in their selected program. View the list of faculty advisors.

Before meeting with an academic advisor, it is important to prepare for the advising session by doing the following:

  • Develop a list of questions to ask about your academic program and its requirements
  • Write down or memorize your student identification number (EMPL ID)
  • Bring any additional information that may be useful during the advising session such as placement testing scores and unofficial transcripts from previously attended schools
  • Realistically assess work, family, and outside obligation for the upcoming semester
  • Begin to think about your occupational and educational goals. If you need assistance in this area you may wish to meet with an advisor in one of the Career, Employment, & Transfer Centers.

Career and Transfer Advising

In addition to curricular advising, Reynolds provides transfer and career advising for students that intend to transfer to a four-year college or university, and/or that may need assistance with career exploration. Career, Employment, & Transfer Center are available to assist students with the development of specific academic plans that will easily transfer to the institution(s) of their choice. Advisors can also help students determine the most appropriate academic program(s) by administering career interest inventories such as the VCCS Wizard, Discover and the Strong Interest Inventory.
